In the present scenario, when India still is grappling with the novel coronavirus pandemic that started in China’s Wuhan, scientists have warned of another virus from China that has the potential to spread diseases. Researchers at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have discovered this virus from China. This virus is called the “Cat Que Virus” is found in Culex mosquitos and pigs, which has been largely reported in China and Vietnam. As per recent reports, it infected several people in these countries. The virus comes from Culex mosquitoes, pigs in China, and Vietnam; India too provides a breeding climate to these species of Culex mosquitoes.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has cautioned people of the virus — Cat Que — that has emerged in China, as per a study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR). The apex body revealed that the virus has the potential to spread across India which may lead to multiple diseases including febrile illnesses, meningitis, and pediatric encephalitis. ICMR states that many virologists at the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, have claimed that they are successful at finding antibodies against this virus in 883 people. This implies the virus has already marked its entry into the country.
The researchers at NIV, however, couldn’t find the virus in human or animal samples till now. Earlier in 2014 and 2017, two cases of the virus had emerged in India, both from Karnataka. The ICMR study further said that mosquitoes in India are vulnerable to CQV, which could lead to a different epidemic. Its natural host maybe a mosquito. Domestic pigs are considered the initial mammalian host of the Cat Que virus, the study added.
So, to avoid the possibility of infection by this virus we all should take precautions and follow safety measures which include prevention of water collection in plants, water coolers, and nearby surroundings!!!
